Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance is considered to be readily biodegradable based on read-across from an appropriate structural analogue.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

A biodegradation study is available for the analogue substance, 3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)propionaldehyde (tradename Bourgeonal). The ready biodegradability of the test material has been determined by the Manometric Respirometry Test according to the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, Method No. 301 F.

The test material undergoes an average of 65% biodegradation after 28 days under the test conditions. Biodegradation starts at day 15 (14%) and reaches 60 at the end of the 10-day window (days 4 to 14). The test substance should therefore be considered as readily biodegradable according to this test. At the concentration used in the test (100 mg/L), the test substance is not inhibitory to the micro-organisms.

The study was performed in compliance with GLP and in accordance with recognised standardised guidelines, the study was assigned a reliability score of 2 in line with the principles defined in Klimisch et al (1997) as the study was performed on a structural analogue of the registered substance. Due to the structural similarities between the two substances, it was considered appropriate to use data from the source substance to represent the target substance (for further details see read-across justification document, attached in section 13).
