The reaction product Marlon ARL and its constituent substances (i.e., linear alkylbenzenesulfonate and sodium toluene sulfonate) are not supposed to be directly applied to soil and an indirect exposure to soil via sewage sludge transfer is unlikely since the substances are readily biodegradable. For a substance being considered as readily biodegradable, it can be assumed that it will be biodegraded within the STP process and as a consequence a significant transfer to the soil compartment is not expected. Therefore, no tests on terrestrial organisms are recommended. There are a number of studies on LAS (the major constituent in Marlon ARL [the substance to register] for soil microorganisms, terrestrial arthropods and terrestrial plants.

A 2007 published risk assessment of LAS in agricultural soils concluded the PNEC for soil is 35 mg/kg soil dw. This assessment included toxicity data from 9 invertebrate and 12 plant studies.
