Additional information

Based on the available data on its physical and chemical properties,2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butyronitrile (HMTBN) is acolourless/yellow liquid with a strong odour,it hasafreezingpoint below –50°C at standard pressureand a relative density of1,11 at 20°C(+/- 0,5°C).

HMTBNdecomposes into 3-(methylthio)propanal and hydrogen cyanide when heating between 215°C and 310°Cat standard pressure. The stability of HMTBN is also link to the pH. The pH need to be acid (pH<5) in order to avoid the degradation in AMTP and the polycondensation of cyanure.

HMTBN is considered as alow volatility substancewith a vapour pressure of approximately0,075 Pa at 25°C.

It is consideredvery solublein water based on a water solubility between110 g/L, and to have alow potential for bioaccumulationbased on a predictedlogKow value of -0.62.

Besides, HMTBN has been shown to benon flammable based on its flash point above to 92°Cand it has aauto-ignition temperature of270°C.Based on its chemical structure, HMTBN isnot expected to be explosive nor to have oxidising properties.
