Description of key information

The toxicity of chloroacetaldehyde to the bacterium Pseudomonas putida was determined in a growth inhibition test according to the method described in the German Standard DIN 38412 Teil 8 and the International Standard ISO 10712. The study was carried out in according with the OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice.
The concentrations of chloroacetyldehyde tested were 0, 6.5, 11, 20, 36, 62 and 111 mg/L. The concentrations given are nominal concentrations of chloroacetaldehyde. The growth was determined after 15.5 hours incubation at 23 +/- 1 °C by measuring the increase in absorbancy of the culture at 605 nm.
The effect values and their 95% confidence interval were calculated by a parametric model.
The EC10 with respect to bacterial growth after 15.5 hours was found to be 36.9 mg/L with a 95% confidence interval of 34.6-39.4 mg/L. This corresponds to an EC10 value of 17.0 mg/L (16.2-18.4 mg/L) with respect to the active ingredient.
The EC50 with respect to bacterial growth was found to be 44.7 mg/L with a 95% confidence interval of 35.1-57.0 mg/L. This corresponds to an EC50 value of 20.9 mg/L (16.4-26.7 mg/L) with respect to the active ingredient.
The test was valid as the increase in the control growth was sufficient and the EC50 of the reference substance 3,5-dichlorophenol had the expected value of 21.0 mg/L.
