Additional information

Sodium 2-biphenylate is not stable at environmentally relevant conditions. On contact with water Sodium 2-biphenylate will dissociate forming NaOH and the conjugate acid 2-phenylphenol. At environmentally relevant pH (pH 5-9) the substance will occur in neutral form (pKa: 9.5 at 20 °C).  The available tests on biodegradation demonstrate a rapid elimination of 2-phenylphenol (OECD 301B: 70.8 – 75.7% in 28 days). Abiotic degradation by hydrolysis is therefore considered not relevant for the assessment.
