Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Dichloromethylbenzene is not readily biodegradable but showed biodegradation with a half-life of 31.7 days at 12°C in a surface water simulation test according to OECD 309. However one minor component (2,3 -DCT, content about 9%) showed a half-life of about 55 days. A study in soil with degradation under unaerobic conditions yieled half-lifes in the range of 90 to 120 days. Based on the simulaton test in surface water the substance is P but not vP. Further, neither the T nor the B/vB criteria are fulfilled. Thus, the substance is not a PBT / vPvB substance.

Primary degradation pathways of dichlorotoluenes are hydroxylation of the methyl group and/or di-hydroxylation of the aromatic ring. Both directions yield metabolites which are expected to have a higher water solubility and a lower water-octanol water coefficient. Thus, at least the B-criterion is not fulfilled for these metabolites. Consequently, the metabolites are also not PBT / vPvB.
