Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Description of key information

DINP is readily biodegradable and therefore is not considered to accumulate in the environment. Additional simulation waste water treatment plant and sediment tests confirmed this assumption demonstrating a half life of approximately 1 day for DINP analogues and mono ester of DINP.

Additional information

DINP is readily biodegradable. Studies to assess the biodegradability of DINP in simulation tests (water and sediment) are not needed becasue sufficient data are available to assess its degradation in these compartments. A study using an analogue, di n-nonyl phthalate, resulted in 91% biodegradation after 7 days using treated waste water. The biological half-life was less than 1 day. In a natural marine sediment the mono ester (mono isononyl phthalate) of DINP exhibited a relatively rapid rate of biodegradation , with a measured half-life of 23 hours.
