Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxic effects on sediment dwelling organisms are not expected.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Hexanoic acid C6 (CAS 142-62-1) is characterized by a log Kow < 3 (log Kow = 1.92).

According to chapter R. 7b of the ‘Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment' (ECHA, 2017) a log Kow of 3 is defined as a trigger value for a sediment assessment. The log Kow of hexanoic acid C6 (CAS 142-62-1) is 1.92 and thus < 3.Furthermore, the environmental exposure assessment according to Annex XI, Section 3 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 indicates no risk for the sediment compartment (all RCR < 1 based on EPM; please refer to Chapter 9 and 10 of the Chemical Safety Report for detailed information).

In conclusion, since for hexanoic acid (CAS 142-62-1) the log Kow is < 3 and the RCR is < 1 no toxicity study with sediment organisms is needed.
