Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Version / remarks:
The OECD guideline refers to ISO Standard 304-1985 as a suitable method to follow.
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
The OECD Guideline recommends double-distilled water. However, the ISO method it refers to states that one only needs to report the type of water used.
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The glassware and ring were cleaned in dilute sulfuric acid solution, water rinsed, and then flamed using a propane gas torch to remove any organic residue. The platinum ring was flamed to a bright orange color before each measurement. The method of cleaning used is satisfactory given the nature of the test solutions.
The cleaning process is slightly different from both the ISO and OECD Guideline. The ISO method reference calls for concentrated sulfuric acid followed by water and no flame. The OECD Guideline calls for chromo-sulfuric acid, followed by distilled water, and then methanol flame.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
ring method
