Test material

Constituent 1
Chemical structure
Reference substance name:
Cadmium
EC Number:
231-152-8
EC Name:
Cadmium
Cas Number:
7440-43-9
Molecular formula:
Cd
IUPAC Name:
cadmium
Test material form:
other: massive form
Details on test material:
for the tests, cadmium metal wires were mounted in epoxy holders, leaving a well-defined metallic surface exposed to the test solution. Exposed surface corresponded to the surface of a 1 mm diameter sphere.

cadmium massive: summary of the T/D test results (in µg Cd/l) at pH 6 for the 7 days (168 hours) 1, 10 and 100 mg/L loading (acute endpoint) and 28 days (672 hours) for the 1 mg/L loading (chronic endpoint).

The control concentration (T=0) was below detection limit for the whole experiment for all treatments.

Tests were of satisfying repeatability (Coeficient of Variation 5 -12% at 7d; 5% with 1mg L loading at 28 days).

The dissolution was proportional to loading at 1 mg/l and 100mg/l loading. For 10mg/l, a lower dissolution was observed. The higher dissolution rates were used for the assessment.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Test results of good quality and relevant for assessing the transformation/dissolution of metallic cadmium in aqueous solutions according to OECD.
Executive summary:

The transformation/Dissolution of cadmium metal in massive form was assessed in a standard T/D test according to OECD, under conditions maximizing solubilisation (pH 6).

The dissolution was proportional to loading at 1 mg/l and 100mg/l loading. For 10mg/l, a lower dissolution was observed. The higher dissolution rates were used for the assessment.
