Additional information

No study is available on toxicity on algae of fatty acids, soybean oil, conjugated (CAS 1176286 -43 -3). Therefore ecotoxicological effects are predicted from adequate and reliable data for source substance(s) by read-across to the target substance within the group applying the group concept in accordance with Annex XI, Item 1.5, of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.

As the main constituents of the mixture are C16, C18', C18'' conjugated and C18'', read-across is performed to the saturated palmitic acid C16 (CAS 57 -10 -3) and the unsaturated oleic acid C18' (CAS 112 -80 -1). Oleic acid contains one double-bond and is, as the blend under discussion and the palmitic acid, a member of the fatty acids category. Furthermore, a supporting read across is performed to fatty acids, tall oil (CAS 61790 -12 -3), since the main components of this fatty acids mixture are also unsaturated C18 components (50 -60% C18', 35 -40% C18'').

The palmitic acid C16 (CAS 57 -10 -3) was tested on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata according to OECD 201 in a GLP-study (Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan, 2000). On regard to the low water solubility of the test substance (< 0.05 mg/L) only a limit test with 10 mg/L nominal, corresponding to 0.9 mg/L initial mean measured) by using a solvent was tested. As no effects could be observed at this test concentration, the ECr50 for growth rate is reported to be above 0.9 mg/L (initial mean measured) and the NOEC is stated as 0.9 mg/L (initial mean measured).

The 72 h experiment conducted with oleic acid C18' (CAS 112 -80 -1) provided by the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan (2003) as well, was conducted according to OECD 201 under GLP conditions. Pseudokirchnereilla subcapitata was tested under static conditions in a limit test at a test concentration of 3.6 mg/L (nominal) corresponding to 2.6 mg/L (mean measured). The resulting EC50 (72 h) and the NOEC (72 h) were > 2.6 mg/L (mean measured) and 2.6 mg/L (mean measured), respectively. Thus, no toxic effects on aquatic algae were observed within the water solubility (3.6 mg/L) of the test substance in the test medium.

The third study on toxicity to algae with fatty acids, tall oil was conducted according to OECD 202 under GLP conditions (Pine Chemical Association, 2004). Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata was exposed to water accomodated fractions (WAF) of 125, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg/L (nominal). Only in the highest WAF an inhibition of growth rate < 50% was observed and an EL50 (72 h) of > 1000 mg/L and a NOELR (72 h) of 750 mg/L was stated.

With regard to the stated results no effects on algae of fatty acids, soybean oil, conjugated are expected up to the limit of water solubility.
