Description of key information

A toxicity test was conducted with the marine diatom (Skeletonema costatum) exposed to 1,2-dichloropropane under sealed-vessel conditions, under GLP, in general accordance to standard methods, and resulted in a 72-hour ErC50 value 15.4 mg/L and NOEC of 8.50 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for marine water algae:
15.4 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for marine water algae:
8.5 mg/L

Additional information

The 1,2 -dichloropropane study by Dow (1988) with the marine diatom (Skeletonema costatum) was selected as the key study because it was conducted under sealed-vessel conditions with measured confirmation of doses and in general accordance with standard methods. The 72 -hour ErC50 value was 15.4 mg/L and the 72 -hour growth rate NOEC was 8.50 mg/L.

The remaining 5 supporting studies were not considered key studies due to unsuitable test design or insufficient data available for reliable assessment (e.g. 48 -hour test, no cell count data available for calculation of 72 -hour endpoint values, poor biological response). None of the supporting studies provided the required 72 -hour EC50 and NOEC for growth rate.
