Description of key information

Half-lives for the dissapation of 1,2-dichloropropane in soils range from 41 to 69 days (average 52 days) at 15 C.  Based on the release rates of water extractable inorganic chloride in the soil samples, the total degradation of 1,2-dichloropropane applied at normal field rates is slow.

The rates of dissipation and chloride release in soils amended with 1,2 -dichloropropane was examined in 2 sandy soils (organic carbon content 7.7% and 1.9%; pH value 4.3 and 5.0) and 2 clay soils (organic carbon content of 1.5% and 1.8%; clay content 7.9% and 17.4%; pH value 7.7 and 7.6).  The soils were incubated with 1,2 -dichloropropane in closed glass vessels and amended bimonthly.  Twenty-seven months after the last addition of 1,2 -dichloropropane the organic chloride content of the soils was analyzed to determine the reduction of 1,2-dichloropropane.  Judging from the release rates of water extractable inorganic chloride in the soil, the total degradation of the components applied at normal field rates was slow.
