Description of key information

For diethyl carbonate no valid experimental data on the metabolism in vivo are available. Therefore, the TIMES software platform (Version 2.27.2) has been used for predicting the most likely metabolites of diethyl carbonate. The predicted metabolites by using the model “in vivo rat liver v.03” are carbon dioxide and the corresponding alcohol (ethanol), which in the following is further oxidized to the corresponding aldehyde.
In an older study with limited documentation, the incubation of diethyl carbonate with homogenates of bovine kidney or mucous membrane from the small intestine resulted in an enzymatic cleavage of the substance.
