Additional information - workers

The degradation product HCl is the dominant species for evaluation of the hazard of BCl3, because of its corrosivity to skin, eye and respiratory lining. A long-term NOAEC, transcribed from HCl to BCl3, of 16 mg/m³ was calculated. The main lesions were irritations/corrosions at the points of contact. Converting this NOAEC to the workers situation of 8h/d and 5d/week and considering the increase respiratory volume and a 100 % absorption for inhalation and oral dosing and for rats and human, a long-term NOAEC of 8 mg/m³ is obtained, according to the ECHA Guidance on Info and CSA R.8 Figure R.8-3.

This is in good agreement with the TWA 8 hour of 5 ppm (8 mg HCl/m3) for HCl, corresponding to 8.6 mg BCl3/m³, recommended by the SCOEL.

The other degradation product, boric acid, has a NOAEC of more than one order of magnitude higher than that of HCL and is therefore not relevant for the hazard assessment of BCl3.
