The test substance was applied to the dorsal area of male albino rabbits (to both intact and scarified areas). These areas were covered with patches of gauze and rubber dam and held in place with adhesive tape. Treated areas were examined after 24 hours.

One rabbit showed a slight erythema where allyl alcohol had been applied to the intact skin 24 hours previously. This had disappeared by the end of 48 hours and no other reactions were noted.

Irritation was not scored using a recognised method. Irritation was assessed using visual observation. Therefore the irritation/corrosion results table has not been filled in as no irritation parameter was used.

Executive summary:

In a primary dermal irritation study, 3 male New Zealand white rabbits were dermally exposed to 0.5 ml of undiluted allyl alcohol without vehicle for 24 hours.  Animals then were observed for 48 hours.  Irritation was assessed via visual inspection.

 

In this study, allyl alcohol was slightly irritating to the skin of male rabbits.
