Description of key information

One key study has been identified as having assessed the toxicity of allyl alcohol to terrestrial plants.

Additional information

In this study, Lactuca sativa was exposed to allyl alcohol for 3 days; the effective concentration of allyl alcohol to inhibit germination by 50% was determined (EC50 value of 0.056mM). The units given for the EC50 value (mM) in this study are not suitable for assessment: these were converted to appropriate units (mg/kg). Although this study was conducted in hydroponic conditions as opposed to soil, the result was deemed applicable to assessment of potential toxicity of allyl alcohol to terrestrial organisms, however, as it is not possible to directly convert the EC50 value into mg/kg soil dw: the units were converted from mM to mg/l to mg/kg (it was assumed mg/l equals mg/kg to give a more conservative value to be used in the assessment).

The EC50 value equivalent to 3.25 mg/kg has been selected as the key acute terrestrial toxicity value for calculation of soil predicted no-effect concentration to be used in the environmental risk characterisation.
