Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

According to Column 2 of REACH Annex IX (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tonnes or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, studies on the effects on terrestrial organisms do not need to be conducted, if direct and indirect exposure to the soil compartment is unlikely.
Graphite, acid-treated is an inorganic solid, consisting of natural graphite and variable amounts of either intercalated nitric acid or acetic acid. Graphite is a naturally occurring inorganic solid substance which is insoluble in water and can be regarded as not bioaccumulative and harmless.
The intercalated acid and the intercalated ions are naturally ubiquitous substances, products of either metabolism or biodegradation processes or abiotic synthesis (formation of nitric acid in the atmosphere from nitric dioxide (N2O) and water). The ions – above all the nitrate ion - can by uptake via the roots be accumulated in the plant.
Acetic acid is a metabolisation and degradation product and occurs in various plants, such as juniper or tobacco.
Relevant exposure of soil to graphite, acid-treated is unlikely regarding its use pattern. Production, handling and use of graphite, acid-treated only take place at a small number of industrial sites with no relevant releases releases of this substance to the environment or to waste water streams and with no probability of any significant releases to the environment from products during their life cycle. Against this background testing of toxicity of graphite, acid-treated to terrestrial plants is not required under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
