An acute alga toxicity study was performed to assess the effect of the test substance, 4,4’-(2-Ethylhexylidene)bisphenol, on the growth of the fresh water alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, during an exposure period of 72 hours under static test conditions and to determine the median effective concentration (EC50) for percent inhibition of average specific growth rate and yield. The desired nominal concentrations were selected at dose levels of 1, 2.6, 6.4, 16, 40 and 100 mg/L.

The test solutions at desired nominal concentrations of 1, 2.6, 6.4, 16, 40 and 100 mg/L (nominal concentrations for the solubility of 100 mg/L: 0.8817 mg/L at initial exposure) were analyzed for the solubility. There were 0.009800, 0.02633, 0.06397, 0.1607, 0.3772 and 0.8618 mg/L mean measured values at initial exposure and concentration remained stbal during the study period (within ±20%).

Based on the results of this study, ErC50 (72 hours) and EyC50 (72 hours) that were obtained under the test conditions with the test substance determined to be 0.3358 mg/L initial measured concentration (95% confidence limits: 0.3039 – 0.3725 mg/L) and 0.1055 mg/L initial measured concentration (95% confidence limits: 0.0958 – 0.1162 mg/L), respectively. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) and Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) for the results of the average specific growth rate and yield were determined to be 0.009800 and 0.02633 mg/L initial measured concentrations, respectively.
