Description of key information

During incubation of the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) with the substance according to EPA OPP 122-2 (Algal Toxicity, Tiers I and II), inhibition of algal growth was observable during the 5 d incubation period with an EC50 value of 4.9 µg/L and a NOEC of 1.83 µg/L. For blue-green algae (tested: Anabaena flos-aquae) no inhibition of algal growth was observable up to the maximum technically achievable concentration of the substance at approximately 0.058 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
4.9 µg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
1.83 µg/L

Additional information

As the substance is manufactured due to its herbicidal activities, effect on green alge is expected. Apparently, cyanobacteria are less sensitive to (2-ethoxy-1-methyl-2-oxoethyl)-5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoate than green algae.
