Results

In the boiling point test, the sample shows a broad endothermic peak in the 60 to 150 °C range. This is followed by a broad exothermic peak. The endothermic peak probably corresponds to evaporation of a minor component, but it is smaller and much broader than a typical boiling point.

The decomposition test shows a small exothermic peak in the 135 – 200 °C range, due to oxidation or decomposition of a minor component. The main decomposition starts at 282 °C.

As an additional aid to interpretation, the boiling point was calculated with the Syracuse software. Two structures were calculated, corresponding to differently branched of the alkyl chains. The calculated boiling points were 354 and 361 °C. This shows that the broad endothermic peak in Fig 1 cannot be the boiling point.

Conclusions

Propanenitrile, 3-[[3-(isodecyloxy)propyl]amino]- decomposes before reaching its boiling point.

The onset of decomposition is at approximately 282 °C.
