Description of key information

Low toxicity is predicted for Uronium hydrogen sulphate: the substance is used as a plant nutrient (N-source) in fertiliser, hence toxicity is unlikely.

Uronium hydrogen sulphate readily degrades to urea and sulfuric acid and/or sulfate ions in the environment:

-         Low toxicity is predicted for urea: the substance is widely used as a plant nutrient (N-source) in fertiliser, hence toxicity is unlikely. The results of a study in soy bean plants confirm the low short-term toxicity of urea ;

-         Sulfate ions are ubiquitous in the environment. Sulfur (as sulfate) is a major plant nutrient, and is essential for crop growth (calcium sulfate, as Gypsum, is used as an inorganic fertiliser to improve soil quality).

Therefore, the performance of short/long term toxicity tests on terrestrial plants is not scientifically justified.
