Additional information

Skin irritation

Reaction Mass of bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylphosphonate and (trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylmethylphosphonate has been tested in an acute dermal toxicity study carried out according to a test protocol that is comparable to the appropriate OECD test guideline (Dow Corning Corporation, 1980d). 2000 mg/kg bw of undiluted test substance was applied to the shaved and abraded dorsal skin of five male and five female rabbits. No edema and very slight erythema was observed in 7/10 test animals examined 30 minutes after a 24-hour exposure period. No perceptible skin reaction was observed in any of the test animals after 72 hours post-exposure. The test substance is therefore considered to be non-irritating.

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII the study does not need to be conducted because an acute toxicity study by the dermal route does not indicate skin irritation up to the relevant limit dose level.

Eye irritation

In an eye irritation study conducted according to a guideline that is equivalent to OECD 405, Reaction Mass of bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylphosphonate and (trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylmethylphosphonate caused a slight amount of conjunctival irritation which was fully reversible within 48 hours and therefore was not classified as an eye irritant (Dow Corning Corporation, 1980e).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available in vivo data, Reaction Mass of bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylphosphonate and (trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylmethylphosphonate does not require classification for skin or eye irritation according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
