Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity data are not available for cerium neodecanoate. Therefore, read-across to the assessment entities cerium cations and neodecanoic acid anions is applied since, upon dissolution of cerium neodecanoate, cerium cations and neodecanoate anions determine fate and toxicity in the environment.

According to the OECD guideline 201, reliable data for soluble cerium substances indicate a 72-h NOErC and 72-h ErC50 of 0.46 mg Ce/L and 0.63 mg Ce/L for growth inhibition of the freshwater algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, respectively. However, the reduced growth rate may be an artifact of the experimental test system and due to phosphate depletion rather than primary toxicity. The acute toxicity of neodecanoic acid (versatic 10) was evaluated in freshwater, yielding a 72 hour LL50 of >100 mg. In addition, QSAR estimations for chronic toxicity of neodecanoic acid (CAS 26896-20-8) towards algae performed with ECOSAR v2.0 result in a chronic aquatic toxicity estimate (ChV) of 12.3 mg neodecanoic acid/L. Thus, cerium neodecanoate may have some potential for toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria based on the toxicity of its dissociation products.
