Description of key information

The aquatic toxicity profile of benzenesulfonic acid, di-C10-14-alkyl derivs., sodium salts (registered and read across target substance) was not determined by actual toxicity studies. Instead, read across source substances were used to predict the aquatic toxicity of the registered substance.

Short-term aquatic ecotoxicological data are available for all three primary trophic levels and aquatic microorganisms. Short-term aquatic ecotoxicological data are available for fresh water and marine fish using analog and structurally similar chemicals. In fish, there are report data reviewed for sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon vaiegatus) rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), performed according to either US EPA method OTS 797.1400 or OECD TG 203. No toxicity was noted in any of these studies at highest test concentrations tested. All data for short-term toxicity to invertebrates come from two study reports conducted using structurally similar analog chemicals according to OECD TG 202 or EPA OTS 797.1300. In each of these studies, the 48-hour Effective Loading Rate was equivalent to the highest concentrations tested. Aquatic algae studies were found for analog and structurally similar substances and were performed according to EPA OTS 797.1050 or OECD TG 201. In each of these studies, the 96-hour Effective Loading Rate was equivalent to the highest concentrations tested. An OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test) study performed using CAS 61789-86-4 was performed using five nominal concentrations. The calculated No Observed Adverse Effect Concentration (NOAEC) based on inhibition compared to the control was calculated to be equal to 10000 mg/l. The EC50 was > 1000 mg/L.
