The metal mould of triangular cross-section of 20 mm base and 10 mm height and 250 mm in length, was loosely filled with test material and dropped three times from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface. The mould was removed from its holder and excess substance scraped off with a straight edge. An asbestos substitute board was placed on the mould, the apparatus inverted, and the mould removed. The board was placed behind a screen, across the line of draught in a fume cupboard. A hot flame (minimum diameter 5 mm) was applied to one end of the pile for 2 minutes.

The test material charred and melted but failed to ignite.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Justification for type of information:
In accordance with point 1 of REACH Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the testing for substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases. Testing does not appear scientifically necessary as under conditions where the test material is in contact with water, no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that the test material is flammable in contact with water.
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Justification for type of information:
In accordance with point 1 of REACH Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the testing for pyrophoric properties. Testing does not appear scientifically necessary as in the daily use and handling of the test material, during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that the test material possesses pyrophoric properties.
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
