Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

In a screening test performed according to OECD 301D testing guideline, 3-Methyl-1,5-pentanediyl diacrylate was biodegraded by 81% at day 28. The 10-day criteria was fulfilled.

Additional information

Two screening tests to assess the biodegradation in water of the test substance were performed. In the first one, carried out according to OECD 301F testing guideline and using domestic activated sludge as inoculum, biodegradations of 57.1% at Day 28 and 77.2% at Day 50 were obtained. The test substance showing a high biodegradability with value closed to the threshold of 60%, a new screening test was performed according to the OECD 301D testing guideline. The water solubility of the test substance being low, adapted protocol was performed. In this test using river water as inoculum, a biodegradation of 81% at Day 28 was reached. Over 60% biodegradation was achieved in a period of approximately 11 days immediately following the attainment of 10% biodegradation. This result was supported by the biodegradation obtained for an analogue (hexamethylene diacrylate (CAS N. 13048-33-4)) which reached values higher than 60% at Day 28. Therefore, the test substance can be considered as readily biodegradable.
