Gross: All internal organs were bright red in color. Lungs were heavy. Skin had pink flush, which was particularly noticeable when skin was separated from carcass.

Histopathology: slight focal hyperinflation of alveoli.

The LC50 for carbon monoxide for a four hour exposure of young adult male rats was deemed 1300 ppm.
Executive summary:

The study consisted of 4 groups of 6 male rats dosed with CO for a single 4 hours exposure at doses of 1300, 1375, 1960 and 2200ppm, via whole body inhalation. Necropsy followed on day 14.

Clinical signs of toxicity during exposure: irregular breathing, red color to ears and eyelids, no response to sound, slight lacrimation at 1300, 1375 and 1960 ppm

Clinical signs of toxicity post exposure: red colour remained in ears for a short time, slight weight loss first day followed by normal weight gain, sensitivity to touch.
