Description of key information

Based on measured maximum zinc concentrations ranging from 738 to 922 µg/L, the water solubility of zinc dilaurate ranges from 5.2 to 6.4 mg/L depending on test conditions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The solubility of zinc dilaurate depends on several factors, including loading and solution matrix (pH, ionic strength, other salts).

In water, solubility ranges from 5.2 to 6.4 mg/L depending on test conditions. However, these calculations assume a 1:1 dissolution of zinc as well as a zinc content of 14.1% and 14.3%, respectively. However, since laurate concentrations have not been experimentally confirmed, it may be more appropriate to express the solubility of zinc dilaurate in measured dissolved zinc concentrations (738 - 922 µg/L Zn).

Rüdel (2010)- ISO 6341 media at a loading of 100mg/L:

In more complex media simulating environmental solutions, solubility resulted in 105.8 µg/L to1194 µg/L dissolved zinc depending on test conditions, specifically solution pH. The following dissolved zinc concentrations have been measured in a transformation dissolution study (guideline conform and under GLP) for 1 day with a loading of 100 mg/L):

pH 8.5:            105.8 ± 2.0 µg/L Zn

pH 8.0:            1194 ± 1.2 µg/L Zn

pH 7.5:            972.3 ± 13 µg/L Zn

pH 7.0:            974.7 ± 4.5 µg/L Zn

pH 6.5:            918.8 ± 7.5 µg/L Zn

pH 6.0:            949.2 ± 12 µg/L Zn

pH 5.5:            987.2 ± 17 µg/L Zn

pH 5.5:            968.8 ± 18 µg/L Zn

The maximum solubility of the test item in the screening / pH-optimization test at a loading of 100 mg/L resulted in a zinc concentration of 1194 ± 1.2 μg/L at a pH of 8.0 ± 0.2. Thus, the subsequent full transformation / dissolution test was performed with a loading of 100 mg/L and sampling after 2h, 6h and 24h at pH 8.0. After 24 h, the total dissolved zinc concentrations did not vary by more than 15%. Therefore, according to the OECD guidance 29, the test was terminated. After 24 h dissolved zinc was 976 ± 37 µg/L.
