Based on weight of evidence for representative substances, members of this category are considered to be readily biodegradable. Structural analysis of the streams indicate that they are not expected to undergo hydrolysis due to the lack of hydrolysable functional groups.

Due to the low partition coefficients of the members of this category (log Kow <3), the substances are expected to have low potential for bioaccumulation or adsorption and therefore no testing has been conducted on these endpoints. On the basis that members of this category are expected to have low potential for adsorption to soil or sediment, the biodegradation in these compartments is not considered to be relevant.

Phototransformation in air data indicate that the half-life of methane is 1907 days, ethane is 59 days, propane is 14 days, butane is 6.3 days and isobutane is 6.8 days.
