Description of key information

Toxicity studies of zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) are not available. Thus, read-across to the assessment entities soluble zinc substances and 2-ethylhexanoic acid is applied since the ions of zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) determine its fate and toxicity in the environment.

Zinc: 108 individual high quality NOEC/EC10 values are available, representing 4 nitrogen transformation processes, 5 carbon transformation processes and 8 enzymatic processes, ranging from 17 mg Zn/kg dw for effects on respiration to 2623 mg Zn/kg dw for inhibition of phosphatase activity.

2 -ethylhexanoic acid: Data of 2-ethylhexanoate are not available and not considered to be required for the following reasons: (i) significant adsorption to the solid soil phase is not expected, (ii) 2-ethylhexanoate is readily biodegradable, (iii) data on the toxicity to aquatic organisms point to a low toxic potential and (iv) in addition, the available QSAR-based estimate for earthworms (ECOSAR, version 2.0) of 2-ethylhexanoic acid points to a very low (if any) potential for toxicity to soil organisms. The respective 14-d LC50 for earthworms is estimated with 1994 mg/L and well above the OECD limit of soil toxicity tests. Thus, 2-ethylhexanoate is not considered to have any potential for toxicity to soil microorganisms.

In sum, zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) seems to have some potential for toxicity to soil microorganisms.
