Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The toxicity of phenothiazine for the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined in an OECD 201 (2006) resp. EC C.3 study. Since the test item is of poor water solubility, the medium was prepared according to OECD 23 (difficult substances). All effects values are well above the nominal loading of up to 100 mg/L (measured concentration: 0.66 mg/L).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.74 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.66 mg/L

Additional information

A valid GLP monitored study according to OECD 201 (2006) resp. EC-Method C.3, the toxicity of phenothiazine for the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined. Due to the poor water solubility the preparation of the test medium was performed according to OECD for difficult substances. The value for the NOEC value was found to be equal or higher than the highest tested concentration of 100 mg/L nominal. This nominal NOEC value corresponds to a measured concentration of 0.66 mg/L. As the 72 hours test is actually a more generation study, it appears scientifically not justified, to conduct further algae studies with phenothiazine.

A supporting Japanese study reports a LC 50-value of 0.74 mg/l and a NOEC of 0.1 mg/l.
