Description of key information

Toxicity to microorganisms: Activated sludge respiration inhibition 3 hour EC50 value of 400 mg/L (EC Guideline: 88/302/EC), read-across from an analogous substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
400 mg/L

Additional information

There are no microorganism toxicity data available for 3-chloropropyl(dimethoxy)methylsilane, therefore good quality data for the analogous substance dichloro(3-chloropropyl) methylsilane (CAS 7787-93-1), have been read across. The submission substance, 3-chloropropyl(dimethoxy)methylsilane, hydrolyses rapidly in contact with water to form 3-chloropropyl(methyl)silanediol and methanol. The read-across substance, dichloro(3-chloropropyl)methylsilane hydrolyses very rapidly in contact with water to form 3-chloropropyl(methyl)silanediol and hydrochloric acid. Both substances hydrolyse rapidly and share the same silanol hydrolysis product; 3-chloropropyl(methyl)silanediol. In view of the rapid hydrolysis of the registered substance, it is the silanol hydrolysis product that is relevant for environmental risk assessment.

Methanol does not have adverse effects on microorganisms (OECD 2004).

Hydrochloric acid is not expected to have adverse effects on microorganisms in a sewage treatment plant, where the pH is maintained within a favourable range.

3-Chloropropyl(dimethoxy)methylsilane and dichloro(3-chloropropyl)methylsilane are within an analogue group of substances that exhibit some evidence of toxicity to microorganisms.

This analogue group for the toxicity to microorganisms endpoint consists of organosilicon substances containing chlorosilanes, siloxanes, silanes and alkoxysilanes etc, with chloroalkyl functional group(s) in side chain after any very rapid hydrolysis has been accounted for. 3-Chloropropyl(dimethoxy)methylsilane and dichloro(3-chloropropyl)methylsilane are members of this analogue group.

The table below presents microorganism toxicity data for substances relevant to 3-chloropropyl(dimethoxy)methylsilane (CAS 18171-19-2).

It is considered valid to read-across the results for dichloro(3-chloropropyl)methylsilane (CAS 7787-93-1) to fill the data gap for the registered substance since the source and target substances generate the same silanol hydrolysis product. Additional information is given in a supporting report (PFA 2013j) attached in Section 13.
