Description of key information

There is no available study on the chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity of 2-ethylhexyl thioglycolate. However, results from a subacute study indicate that 2-EHTG does not cause any significant systemic toxicity resulting from prolonged exposure. The consistently negative results from the series of genotoxicity tests (in vitro gene mutations assays on bacteria (Ames test) and mammalian cells (mouse lymphoma assay) and a micronucleus test with mice) do not suggest any cause for concern with respect to carcinogenicity. In addition, 2- EHTG are expected to be initially hydrolysed in several tissues by carboxylesterases to thioglycolic acid and corresponding alcohols (2-ethylhexanol). 2-ethylhexanol is not considered as carcinogenic compound.
