First-aid measures

Description of first aid measures
Pay attention to self-protection.
Remove victims from hazardous area. Immediately remove soiled or soaked clothing and remove it to a safe distance. Keep victim warm, in a stabilized position and covered.
Do not leave victims unattended.
If the casualty is unconscious: Place the victim in the recovery position.

Potential for exposure by inhalation if dusts or smoke are generated.
Move victims into fresh air.
With labored breathing: Provide with oxygen. Consult a doctor.
If the casualty is not breathing: Perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, notify emergency physician immediately.

Skin contact
Wash off affected area immediately with plenty of water.
Continue decontamination with polyethylene glycol 400 after initial rinsing with water and then wash with water and soap.
If symptoms persist, consult a physician for treatment.

Eye contact
With eye held open, thoroughly rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 10 minutes.
Inform emergency physician immediately. (key term: caustic eye burn)

Rinse out mouth.
Immediately give large quantities of water to drink.
Inform emergency physician immediately.

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed
The initial focus is only on the local action, characterized by quickly progressing deep tissue damage.
Coughing is a symptom of respiratory tract after inhalation of dusts or smoke from caustic solids.
In the eye, caustic dusts or smoke cause, depending on the intensity of exposure, severe irritation, destruction, and ablation of the epithelium of the conjunctiva and cornea, corneal clouding, edema and ulcerations.
Danger! Possible loss of eyesight!
Superficial irritations and damage up to ulcerations and scarring develop on the skin.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media
dry powder, dry sand

Unsuitable extinguishing media
water, water spray, high volume water jet

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture
Do not extinguish fires at the leak point since this can result in an uncontrolled blow-back combustion.
In case of fire-fighting with water or foam be aware of dangers of corrosion and of slipping.
Upon contact with water: violent reaction!
Do not use a solid water stream as it may scatter and spread fire.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters
In case of fire: full protective suit and wear a self contained respiratory apparatus

Advice for firefighters
Water used to extinguish fire should not enter drainage systems, soil, or stretches of water Ensure there are sufficient retaining facilities for water used to extinguish fire. Contaminated fire-extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with the regulations issued by the appropriate local authorities.
Fire residues should be disposed of in accordance with the regulations.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Wear personal protective equipment.
Avoid dust formation.
Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking.

Environmental precautions
Dam with sand or earth
Do not allow entrance in sewage water, soil or stretches of water.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
Use mechanical handling equipment.
Suitable binder: lime, soda ash, dry sand

Additional advice
Protect against water.
Risk of spontaneous ignition on entry of air
Evacuate personnel to safe areas.
Remove all sources of ignition.
Sweep up to prevent slipping hazard.
Avoid dust formation.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling
Under inert gas (argon, nitrogen).
Avoid dust formation.
Wear personal protective equipment.

Advice on protection against fire and explosion
Take precautionary measures against static discharges.
Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking.

Dust explosion class
Method: VDI 2263
Maximum rate of pressure rise: 78,8 bar/s ignition energy: 10 kJ
Danger of dust explosion, Hartmann apparatus, VDI 2263

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Store in the original receptacle, keeping this tightly sealed, under cool and dry conditions.
Keep away from direct sunlight.
Protect from warming.
Unsuitable materials aluminium, zinc

Advice on common storage
Observe prohibition against storing together!

German storage class
4.2S - Spontaneously Combustible Solids

Other information
Suitable measuring processes are:
A: respirable dust fraction
BIA method 6068
E: inhalable fraction
BIA method 7284

Engineering measures
Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.
Explosion protection equipment required.

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection
In case of dusts/vapours/aerosols being formed or if the limit values like TLV are exceeded:
use respiratory equipment with suitable filter or wear a self contained respiratory apparatus

Hand protection
suitable protective gloves
Glove material butyl-rubber
Material thickness 0,5 mm
Break through time > 480 min
Method DIN EN 374
Glove material nitrile rubber
Material thickness 0,35 mm
Break through time > 240 min
Method DIN EN 374
Glove material Polychloroprene (PCP)
Material thickness 0,5 mm
Break through time > 120 min

Eye protection
close-fitting protective goggles (e.g. closed goggles)

Skin and body protection
Chemical protection suit, single-use protection suit (antistatic)
Use disposable clothing if appropriate.

Hygiene measures
Prevent the formation of dust.
Do not breathe dust.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
No eating, drinking, smoking, or snuffing tobacco at work. Wash face and/or hands before break and end of work.
Wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

Protective measures
The personal protective equipment used must meet the requirements of directive 89/686/EEC and amendments (CE certification).

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to avoid

Exothermic reaction with:
oxidizing agents
In contact with water sodium and potassium methanolate react very fast, quantitative and exothermic to methanol and the corresponding alkali hydroxides.

formation of flammable gases Reacts violently with water, liberating highly flammable gases.
Dissolves aluminium and zinc slowly with formation of hydrogen.

Disposal considerations

Before disposal consult producer.
With respect to local regulations, e.g. dispose of to suitable waste incineration plant.
No waste key number as per the European Waste Types List can be assigned to this product, since such classification is based on the (as yet undetermined) use to which the product is put by the consumer.
The waste key number must be determined as per the European Waste Types List (decision on EU Waste Types List 2000/532/EC) in cooperation with the disposal firm / producing firm / official authority.
