Description of key information
Cadmium:
Freshwater: chronic sediment data are available for six species. Background corrected species effect values used for PNEC derivation range from 1.3 to 1226.4 mg Cd/kg (average background concentration being 1.2 mg/kg).
Marine water: chronic sediment data are available for three species. The crustacean Leptocheirus plumulosus, and the molluscs Saccostrea glomerate and Anadara trapezia. The background corrected effect values for these species were 1370, 19 and 10 mg Cd/kg, respectively.

Freshwater PNECsediment: Conclusion
It is emphasised that this is an added PNEC, i.e. natural background needs to be taken into account when characterising the risk from monitored data. The assessment of the freshwater PNECadd, sediment for cadmium is based on 6 chronic benthic toxicity data, enough data to construct an SSD. A microcosm study is also available and shows the protectivity of the SSD derived HC5. Therefore, it is considered that use of the SSD derived HC5 value for the freshwater PNEC sedeiment add of 1.4 mg Cd/kg dw (equivalent to 0.3 mg Cd/kg ww), with an assessment factor 1, is justified.
Marine PNECsediment: Conclusion
It is emphasised that this is an added PNEC, i.e. natural background needs to be taken into account when characterising the risk from monitored data. The assessment of the marine PNECadd, sediment for cadmium identified three long-term chronic toxicity studies. These studies were combined with 6 freshwater sediment studies. There was significant overlap between the effect values from marine and freshwater sediment studies, meaning that a combined SSD could be constructed (freshwater sediment NOEC range: 1.3 to 1226 mg Cd/kg and marine sediment NOEC range: 10 to 1370 mg Cd/kg). A saltwater field study is also available and shows the protectivity of the SSD derived HC5. Therefore, it is considered that use of the SSD derived HC5 value for the marine PNEC sediment add of 3.3 mg Cd/kg dw (equivalent to 0.7 mg Cd/kg ww), with an assessment factor 1, is justified.
