Description of key information

A long-term aquatic toxicity test performed with structurally similar benzyl C12-16 alkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride has shown a hatchability NOEC of 273.7 µg/L for fathead minnow eggs. The NOEC for survival was 32.2 µg/L (i.e., equivalent to 0.0322 mg a.i./L) and the NOEC for growth was greater than 32.2 µg/L (i.e., equivalent to >0.0322 mg a.i./L).

The effect of the structurally similar substance C12-C16 ADBAC on toxicity, mortality, effects on hatchability and growth of Fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) was evaluated. In this study, Fathead minnow eggs [20 eggs per replicate with 4 replicates per group (total of 80 eggs per concentration) ] were exposed to mean measured concentrations of 0, 32.3, 75.9, 134.2, 186.8, 273.2 and 488.7m g/L of the radiolabelled test substance. Analytical determination was performed and the sample concentrations of14C-active test substance were verified by liquid scintillation counting. Disintegrations per minute (dpm) of each sample were determined by dpm program in the LS counter. After 7 days, surviving fry from two replicates were thinned to 10 animals per replicate for each exposure group (total of 20 animals per concentration) and exposed to the same concentrations for a 28-day post-hatch static renewal toxicity test. Observations of symptoms of toxicity and mortality were made daily throughout the study. The effects on hatchability, mortality, and growth were based on mean measured concentrations. Dissolved oxygen ranged from 5.0 to 9.2 mg/L, temperature ranged from 24.2 to 26.3 °C, and pH ranged from 6.7 to 7.6. Under the conditions of the study, the NOEC for hatchability of Fathead minnow eggs was 273.7 µga.i./L (0.273 mg a.i./L)). The NOEC for survival was 32.2 µg/L (i.e., equivalent to 0.0322 mg a.i./L) and the NOEC for growth was greater than 32.2 µg/L (i.e., equivalent to >0.0322 mg a.i./L). (McIntyre DO and Pate HO, 1992).
