Description of key information

The key study for acute oral toxicity reports an LD50 value of >2000mg/kg in rat (Rees, 1996; rel 1). The LC50 value for acute inhalation toxicity is reported to be >0.58mg/l (Blair 1980; rel 2). The dermal LD50 (24 hour occluded) was found to be >2000 mg/kg (Rees, 1996; rel 1).

The most recent and high reliability studies were selected as key information. For acute oral and dermal toxicity, high reliability supporting studies were also available which were in accordance with the key information (Cassidy & Clark, 1978; rel 2)

The recorded concentration in the key study for acute inhalation toxicity is reported to be >0.58 mg/l. The recorded concentration in the key study represents the highest possible exposure concentration and is considered for classification purposes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Acute toxicity tests of the tested material (alcohols C7 -9 linear and branched) do not indicate any potential hazard for acute, dermal or inhalation toxicity. Tests on similar substances included in this category are also supportive of these results; which do not warrant classification for any acute toxicity endpoint under DSD or GHS criteria. The substance is therefore not classified for acute toxicity in accordance with EC regulation 1272/2008.
