Description of key information

The octanol-water partition coefficients (log Pow) of a range of C10-13 chlorinated paraffins with a degree of chlorination between 49 and 71% , varied from 4.39 to 8.69.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The octanol-water partition coefficients of several substances composed of C10-13 chlorinated paraffins, were determined by reversed-phase high performance thin layer chromatography. The resolved bands of each test substance were used to calculate upper and lower limits of their log Pow values. The log Pow values for were 4.39 to 6.93 (Cereclor 50LV; 49% chlorination), 5.47 to 7.30 (Witaclor 63; 63% chlorination), 5.68 to 8.01 (Cereclor 70L; 70% chlorination), 5.89 to 8.69 (Huls 70L; 70% chlorination) and 5.37 to 8.69 (Witaclor 71P; 71% chlorination) and 4.48 to 7.38 (Huls 60C; 60% chlorination) (Renberg et al. 1980).

Sijm and Sinnige (1995) determined the octanol-water partition coefficient of a C10-13 chlorinated paraffin (60% chlorinated) using a "slow-stirring" method at 25oC. The chlorinated paraffin was dissolved in octanol (at concentrations of 25 or 50 μg/L) and was stirred with water for up to 7 days. The log Kow values of the individual chlorinated paraffin components were determined to be in the range 5.85 to 7.14, which are in good agreement with the values determined by Renberg et al. (1980).

Hoechst (1990) presented calculated log Kow values of 6.0->6.0 for C10 chlorinated paraffins varying in their extent of chlorination (C10H21Cl to C10Cl22). The partition coefficients are relatively crude but again within the range of the measured values reported by Renberg et al. (1980).
