Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Based on the considerations as described in the attached document “Read-across substantiation C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers” (incl. the supporting references Tuppurainen et al., 2007 and Niska et al., 2008), it can be concluded that the available information of TAME and MTBE can be used to predict the physico-chemical properties of the substance ‘C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers’ with sufficient certainty.

The substance is, as TAME, a colourless liquid with a sweetish odour. TAME has a melting point of < -20 ˚C (Harlan Laboratories, Ltd., 2009a) and a boiling point of 87.3 ºC (Hellenic Petroleum S.A., 2009). The relative density of TAME is 0.77 at 15 ˚C (Huttunen, 1996; Huttunen et al., 1997). The water solubility of TAME is 10400 mg/l at 20 ˚C (Oil Products Research, 1997).The octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) is ≤ 3 (see attachment for details). TAME is not surface active; the surface tension of a 1080 mg/l solution in water is 71.3 mN/m at 23.5 °C (SafePharm Laboratories, Ltd., 2008). TAME has a static viscosity of 0.6 mm²/s at 20.5 °C and 0.494 mm²/s at 40.5 °C (SafePharm Laboratories, Ltd., 2008). Comparable figures are expected for ‘C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers’.

TAME has a flash point of -18 °C (PTB Laboratorium 3.43, 2007). Based on this value and a boiling point of 87.3 °C, TAME, and therefore C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers as well, should be classified as highly flammable (F, R11) / Flammable Liquid Cat. 2 (H225).

The auto-ignition temperature of TAME is 430°C (Huttunen, 1996; Huttunen et al., 1997). The molecular structure of ‘C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers’ does not contain groups that indicate potential reactivity with water or pyrophoric properties. Explosive and oxidising properties are not expected for ‘C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers’.

The substance remains undissociated in water, as it does not contain chemical groups which can undergo dissociation. Furthermore, it is a stable chemical and is not expected to show instability when mixed with typical organic solvents.

As described in the attached document “Read-across substantiation C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers”, the vapour pressure of ‘C5-6 branched alkylmethyl-ethers’ is more reflected by the data of MTBE, i.e. 33000 Pa at 25 °C (Harlan Laboratories Ltd, 2009).

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, a study on granulometry is not needed as the substance is a liquid and used in a non solid or granular form.
