Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2016-06-30
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
other: Substance did not ignite during the preliminary screening test.

Since the test substance did not ignite during the preliminary screening test, it should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing is required.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test substance did not ignite during the preliminary screening test. Based on this result, it should be considered as non-combustible.
Executive summary:

The flammability of niobium dioxide was tested according to EU method A.10. In a preliminary test, the test substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a fireclay plate. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train for five minutes. There was no ignition observed. Since the test substance did not ignite it should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing is required.

The test substance niobium dioxide is therefore considered as non-combustible.

Description of key information

The test substance niobium dioxide (NbO2) is non-combustible.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The flammability of niobium dioxide was tested according to EU method A.10. In a preliminary test, the test substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a fireclay plate. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train for five minutes. There was no ignition observed. Since the test substance did not ignite it should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing is required.

The test substance niobium dioxide is therefore considered as non-combustible.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Since the test substance did not ignite in a preliminary test conducted in accordance with EU method A.10, it should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing is required. The test substance niobium dioxide is therefore considered as non-combustible and no classification is warranted.
