Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Expected non-toxic to microorganisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No specific data exists on the short-term toxicity to microorganisms.

Lysozyme is naturally occurring in many organisms and exhibits a specific antimicrobial activity; nevertheless due to the high diversity of the sewage treatment plant microorganisms community, lysozyme hydrochloride is not expected to be toxic to the STP. Furthermore, it has to be taken into account that lysozyme hydrochloride is ready biodegradable.

The only published data available is reported in the HERA document on Subtilisins (Protease):

EC10 (exposure time unknown): 13100 mg/l (not based on aep) (HERA 2007; Schöberl and Huber, 1988)

This data was reported as having a Klimisch score of 4 in the HERA document, thus not suitable for the aquatic toxicity assessment.

In conclusion, taken into account the wide variability of the sewage treatment plants organisms, that lysozyme hydrochloride is readily biodegradable and that its enzymatic activity can be easily deactivated by the environment conditions (pH, temperature, ecc), it is expected that lysozyme hydrochloride has not impact on the sewage treatment plant efficacy.
