Description of key information

NOEC/EC10 values for chronic nickel toxicity to algae range from 12.6 μg/l to 425 μg/l and from 97 μg Ni/L to 17891 μg Ni/L for freshwater and marine species, respectively, and have been carried forward for the HC5-& PNECderivation.

Freshwater:

From the database of chronic nickel toxicity to freshwater algae, 58 individual NOEC’s are reported for 8 different algae species. NOEC/EC10 values range from 12.6 μg/l for Scenedesmus accuminatus (Deleebeeck et al., 2006) to 425 μg/l for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (Deleebeeck et al., 2005 & DeSchamphelaere et al. 2006).

 

The following table indicates those NOEC or EC10 values of high quality that have been carried forward for the HC5-& PNEC derivation

Marine:

From the database of chronic nickel toxicity to marine algae, EC10 values are reported for four species.  EC10 values range from 97 μg Ni/L for growth of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) (Golder 2007) to 17891 μg Ni/L for growth of the dinoflagellate,Dunaliella tertiolecta (Parametrix 2007c). The table below indicates the NOEC or EC10 values of high quality selected for derivation of HC5 and the marine aquatic PNEC.
