Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The mean between two determinations gives the following values for the melting range of tar, wood:
Melting range: - 32.9 °C to - 22.0 °C (240.3 – 251.2 K)
Standard deviation: 0.1 °C (begin); 0.3 °C (end)
Estimated accuracy: ± 0.4 °C

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
-27.5 °C

Additional information

This study was performed in order to determine the melting point or the melting range of

the test item Tar wood.

The melting point is one of the fundamental physico-chemical properties of a chemical

substance. The test item was heated with a defined heating rate until melting / decomposition

of the test item could be observed. The start temperature was determined in a pretest.

The validity criterion “difference between duplicate determinations” was met. The test item

Tar wood showed a melting range, no melting point. This was to be expected, as the test

item is a mixture.

No observations were made which might cause doubts on the validity of the study outcome.

Therefore, the result of the study is considered valid.
