Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2010
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Basic data given
Justification for type of information:
A discussion and report on the read across strategy is given as an attachment in IUCLID Section 13.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across: supporting information
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Wilhelmy plate method is used to measure the surface tension using a standardized plate with a plate tensiometer. The plate is moved towards the surface until the meniscus connects with it. The surface tension is calculated from the resulting force. Due to uncertain wetting behaviour, the plate can only be used for interfaces under certain limitations.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
plate method
Key result
Surface tension:
20.9 mN/m
Temp.:
25 °C
Conc.:
100 vol%
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study a surface tension of 20.9 mN/m at 25 °C was determined for the test substance, hydrocarbons, C6-C7, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <5% n-hexane.
Executive summary:

Under the conditions of this study a surface tension of 20.8 mN/m at 25 °C was determined for the test substance, hydrocarbons, C6-C7, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <5% n-hexane.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because based on structure, surface activity is not expected or cannot be predicted

Description of key information

The surface tension range of Hydrocarbons, C6-C10 (even numbered), n-alkanes, isoalkanes, >5% n-hexane is read across to hydrocarbons, C6-C7, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <5% n-hexane. The surface tension of the latter substance is 19 to 23 mN/m at 25 °C.a

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

There is no surface tension data available for Hydrocarbons, C6 -C10 (even numbered), n-alkanes, isoalkanes, >5% n-hexane. However, data is available for hydrocarbons, C6-C7, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <5% n-hexane and is presented based on analogue read across.

Wilhelmy plate method is used to measure the surface tension using a standardized plate with a plate tensiometer. A range of 19 to 23 mN/m at 25 °C covers all possible grades within this substance description if measured with the agreed method. Using this method ExxonMobil Chemical (2010) determined the surface tension to be 20.9 mN/m at 25 °C, demonstrating that the measured value falls within borderline values.
