Principles of method if other than guideline:
The substance copper naphthenate is legally classified (Index No. 029-003-00-5) as flammable liquid Cat. 3 (with a flash point ≥ 23 °C and ≤ 60 °C). Hence, testing on auto-flammability is required according to Regulation (EC) no 1907/2006 Annex VII.
Based on the appearance of the test item copper naphthenate (i.e., green, liquid, viscous, paste) there were modifications to the existing guidelines necessary that do not effect the result of the study.

Deviations from the guidelines were:
- Sampling should be performed according to DIN 51750-1 but was performed by heating up the test item to approx. 80 °C in a water bath to allow the removal of a homogeneous sample
- Viscous liquids should be given drop by drop into the ignition vessel with the syringe. Based on the highly viscous pasty test item, metal spatulas of different sizes were used for sampling and input into the ignition flask.
- Substance quantity: 5 drops required. However, due to the nature of the test item, substance amounts of 0.25 till 0.45 g, 0.10 till 0.20 g and 0.01 till 0.10 g were used.
- Repetitions of the main experiment were not performed, since one main test was considered sufficient to evaluate the auto-flammable properties of the test substance and to reduce the workload for the hard-to-handle test substance to an acceptable minimum.

Preliminary Test

An approximate value of the ignition temperature of the test item was first determined by a preliminary test. An ignition is denoted as “+” and no ignition is denoted as “-“. Approximately 0.25 g to 0.45 g test item was put into the Erlenmeyer flask at each temperature.

Main Test

An ignition is denoted as “+” and no ignition is denoted as “-“. Approximately 0.01 g to 0.45 g test item was put into the Erlenmeyer flask at each temperature. At temperatures around the auto-ignition temperature 3 different amounts of test item were given into the Erlenmeyer flask (i.e., 0.25-0.45 g, 0.10-0.20 g and 0.01-0.10 g).

Lowest value of the first series of experiments: 361 °C

Lowest value of the main test: 358 °C

Different amounts of test item (i.e., 0.01 g till 0.45 g) at different temperatures below 358 °C (i.e., 354 °C and 355 °C) were tested.

No auto-ignition of the test item was observed.

Based on results of the main test series, the lowest auto-ignition temperature was 358 °C. One main test was carried out with different amounts of test item.This was considered sufficient to evaluate the auto-flammable properties of the test substance and to reduce the workload for the hard-to-handle test substance to an acceptable minimum.

According to Regulation EC No. 440/2008 and DIN 51794: The auto-ignition temperature rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 °C was determined to be 355 °C.

In accordance with DIN EN 13463-1, the test item has to be assigned to temperature class T2.

Conclusions:
The auto-ignition temperature of the test item Copper Naphthenate was determined to be 355 °C (determined at 984.6 – 984.8 hPa) according to the Regulation EC No. 440/2008 Method A.15. Auto-Ignition Temperature (Liquids and Gases) and DIN 51794 (2003).
It is noted here that according to ECHA guidance – Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment; chapter R.7A: Endpoint specific guidance, October 2015 – the auto-ignition temperature for liquids is not used directly for classification and labeling according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. However, it can be used in the chemical safety assessment in considering risks associated with processing the substance.
Therefore, in accordance with DIN EN 13463-1, the test item has to be assigned to temperature class T2.
