Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, copper salt are not available. Thus, read-across to the assessment entities soluble copper substances and

2-ethylhexanoic acidis applied since the ions of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, copper saltdetermine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable studies indicate that the moiety of ecotoloxicological concern are copper cations. Regarding copper toxicity in aquatic environments, a large set of data is available including multiple studies on freshwater fish species D. rerio, C. carpio, P. promelas and O. mykiss as summarized in the attached report “Derivation of acute Ecotoxicity Reference Values (ERVs) for copper”, resulting in pH-dependent species-specific geometric mean values E(L)C50 of 47.4 -63.6 µg/L (O. mykiss), 20.2 -167.4 µg/L (D. rerio), 810 µg/L (C. carpio) and 12.1 -255.9 µg/L (P. promelas). Regarding the 2-ethylhexanoate anion, toxicity testing on freshwater fish revealed a low hazard potential as indicated by an LC50 (96h) of >100 mg/L. Thus, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, copper salt appears to have potential for acute toxicity to fish.
