Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Data are read across from pentavalent vanadium substances for this endpoint. For metal compounds without toxic ligands, toxicity is driven by the release of metal ions and influenced by the oxidation state and extent of release of the ions. Magnesium divanadium hexaoxide contains pentavalent vanadium, determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (Erden 2018). Read across from other pentavalent vanadium substances is therefore considered to be appropriate.

Although the registered substance also contains magnesium, the (eco)toxicological hazards associated with this component of the substance are lesser than the hazards of vanadium. In addition, magnesia (magnesium oxide) is exempt from REACH under REACH Annex V, Entry 10. Therefore, the hazard assessment of the target substance focuses on the vanadium component as a worst-case approach.

For a full justification of the read across approach, please see the read across justification attached in IUCLID Section 13.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The classification is read across from pentavalent vanadium and the substance is therefore classified as mutagenic category 2 (H341).
