Description of key information

The toxicity to the aquatic environment of 2-Ethylhexanol phosphate, diethanolamine salt was investigated by performing GLP-compliant short-term toxicity studies to algae, fish and aquatic invertebrates. Studies were performed on marine species.

The short-term toxicity of the registered substance to aquatic invertebrates was assessed according to ISO 14669 (1999) Water Quality - Determination of acute lethal toxicity to marine copepods (Copepoda; Crustacea). A 48h LC50 of 70.2 mg/L was obtained on Acartia Tonsa.

A limit fish test was performed on Scophthalmus maximus with 96h LC50 >10 mg/L

The toxicity to Algae was investigated with a ISO 10253 study on Marine Algal; Growth Inhibition Test to Skeletonema costatum. A 72h EC50 of 16.8 mg/L was obtained which identified Algae as the most sensitive species of the three trophic levels tested.

Considering that no chronic data are available for the registered substance and that the lowest L(E)C50 for 2-Ethylhexanol phosphate, diethanolamine salt is between 10 and 100 mg/L, and the substance is not deemed to be readily biodegradable according to Regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008, it meets the criteria for classification as Aquatic Chronic 3; H412 ‘Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects’ in accordance with Regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.
