Experimental data evaluating the toxicity of Nonanoic acid, esters with adipic acid and trimethylolpropane to sediment organisms are not available. Generally an exposure of sediment organisms to the substance is unlikely due to the ready biodegradability of the substance. According to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b, readily biodegradable substances can be expected to undergo rapid and ultimate degradation in most environments, including biological Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) (ECHA, 2017). Therefore, after passing through conventional STPs, only low concentrations of these substances are likely to be (if at all) released into the environment. Furthermore, the substance is poorly soluble in water (WS of grade one: 22 μg/L to 43 μg/L (pH 6.3), WS of grade two: 13.5 μg/L (pH 6.3)). The Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2017) states that once insoluble chemicals enter a standard STP, they will be extensively removed in the primary settling tank and fat trap and thus, only limited amounts will get in contact with activated sludge organisms. Thus, discharged concentrations of these substances into the aqueous/sediment compartment are likely to be negligible. Acute toxicity of the substances to fish, aquatic invertebrates or algae are not expected based on the available studies. In conclusion, toxicity to sediment organisms is not expected to be of concern.
